Certificate of marital status

If one or both of you have foreign citizenship, please contact The Agency of Family Law (DA:Familieretshuset) to get a certificate of marital status. A certificate of marital status is documentation that you meet the conditions in the Danish Act on the Formation and Dissolution of Marriage (Marriage Act).

Do you meet the following criteria?

  • You are a Danish citizen
  • You are a citizen in a Nordic country (i.e. Finland, Sweden, Norway or Island)
  • You have a permanent residence permit, issued in Denmark
  • You have an obtained a permanent residence right under the Directive 2004/38/EC implemented in Danish law as “EU-Opholdsbekendtgørelsen”

In that case you will not need to send an application to The Agency of Family Law. You must apply for a certificate of marital status at the local municipality. In the City of Odense, you need to contact the Wedding Office.

For citizens who do not reside in Denmark

Please note that there is a 2-month processing time, so you should contact the Agency of Family Law no later than two months before you plan to marry.
